February 25 - Day 221

Breakfast For Dinner.
I usually have breakfast for dinner once a week, and usually it's Tuesdays, but not this week. I usually go through phases with my breakfast for dinner. Right now I'm in the eggs-in-a-bell- pepper-on-toast-with-avocado phase.

February 24 - Day 220

Footprints.
Take a close look - Duck footprints!! I wandered in the old grove today. There was an eerie stillness in the grove with not much to catch my attention, until I walked across the foot bridge, looked down and saw these perfect duck prints.

February 23 - Day 219

What's Behind Door #3?
I'm at the old fairground for today's photo. When strolling by Heritage Building 1935 I notice the door to this shed-like building is slightly ajar. I peek in and see what appears to be two old horse trailers fashioned with wooden doors or really crude porto-potties. Can you read the graffiti? "Do Not Enter, if you Enter You Will Die". I obviously did not enter.

February 22 - Day 218

Hey Rosetta! @ Call The Office.
One week after the release of Seeds, the third full album from St. John's Hey Rosetta! I am fortunate enough to be at Call The Office in London, a stop on the North American tour. If you've been reading my blog, you know I have a spot in my heart for this band and I encourage one and all to pick up any of their albums, but to be honest to really experience HR! you need to go to a live show - where the sextet - well 7 tonight - absolutely shines. Since Tuesday I've been thinking about how to describe this show - incredible, amazing, breathtaking - none seem to do it justice. There is something sensational about this band. Please find this out for yourself. Oh and as for Seeds - inspirational. Well done Hey Rosetta! Well done.

February 21 - Day 217

Mac & Cheese with Butternut Squash.
Preheat oven to 375. Combine 1 small butternut squash, cut into 1" cubes, 1 cup vegetable stock and 1.5 cups milk (I used almond) in a medium saucepan, bring to a boil over med-high heat. Reduce heat to medium, simmer until squash is tender when pierced with a fork, about 20 min. Remove from heat, mash contents of saucepan, stir in a pinch of poudre douce (or nutmeg), 3/4 coarse salt and fresh ground pepper. Meanwhile cook 1 box whole wheat elbow macaroni as instructed on package. Drain and transfer to a large bowl, stir in squash mixture, 1 cup mozzarella (or sharp cheddar) and 1/2 cup cream cheese (or ricotta). Lightly coat your baking pan with cooking spray or butter, transfer noodle mixture to pan, top with 2 TBSP homemade bread crumbs mixed with 1TBSP olive oil. Cover with foil and bake 20 minutes, remove foil and bake for an additional 30 - 40 minutes - until top is lightly browned and crisp.

February 20 - Day 216

In Grateful Memory.
This statue sits on a patch of grass at the corner of Huron & William Streets, in front of the Lion's Pool. Until today I had never stopped to find out what it was. Inscribed is the following "To the people of Stratford in grateful memory of their kindness and hospitality to the soldiers of the oppressed Netherlands 1941-1945"

February 19 - Day 215

The Great Zamperini.
I just finished reading Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, And Redemption. I was interested in reading the book after I read A Runner's World article "Life According To Louie" and an excerpt from Unbroken. Louie, today 93 years old, began as a juvenile delinquent, was coaxed into running by his older brother to become a young running sensation - competing in the 1936 Berlin Olympics. During WWII he was an odyssey after the crash of his B24 and 47 days adrift on a raft in the Pacific Ocean, followed by 2 years as a POW in a Japanese Labour Camp. At 93 Louie still runs (just not far) and still fly planes with an 88 year old buddy whose wife is fearful of him flying alone. He's carried Olympic torches and been qualified in 83 professions. The story of Louie's triumphs and pitfalls before, during and after the war are something else. After reading the story you can see how "The Great Zamperini" nickname suits him.

February 18 - Day 214

St. Andrew's Fall
Took a stroll after work today - well it was an attempt to start running again but I am not there yet. But since my attempt was in the cemetery we get a shot of St. Andrew's Section.

February 17 - Day 213

Self Portrait.
Figuring a self portrait should reflect something interesting about myself I chose to take a yoga shot (plus it's a good way to check my form). I've been doing yoga since about 2005 - and teaching since 2007. Never an athletic girl, or one for team sports, or sports with balls - throw one at me and I close my eyes or turn away - yoga seemed a good fit. Yoga has given me the confidence and patience I was lacking in my early to mid 20s and I can say beginning a practice has been one of the best things I've done for myself.

February 16 - Day 212

Easy Indian Stew.
Saute 1 medium diced onion and 2 cloves minced or thinly sliced garlic in 2 TBSP of oil over medium until onion is soft, 4 to 6 min. Add 1 TBSP curry and 1 TSP ground ginger. Stir until fragrant, about 1 min. Add 2 cans rinsed chickpeas, 1 jar good quality tomato sauce (I use a tomato & basil) and 1.5 cups of water. Bring to a boil, reduce to simmer for 8 - 10 minutes until thickened. Can be served over rice. I made this for tomorrow and Friday's lunch - we eat it on its own with a little goat cheese sprinkled on top.
~ adapted from Everyday Living.

February 15 - Day 211

Les fleurs.
A little pop of colour to brighten up the grey of February.

February 14 - Day 210

Love Birds.
To honour St. Valentine, two love birds perched on a planter. Even though I was valentine-less this year, I still can appreciate a day dedicated to mushy, lovey, dovey feelings. (And I'm not being sarcastic!)

February 13 - Day 209

Towers.
To me hydro towers have always looked like giant robots in fields. While I would have preferred a different setting to get these guys, it's hard this time of year to pull off on the highway and tread through some farmer's field, so the Good Life Parking lot had to do.

February 12 -Day 208

Ice Age. 2.
With an predicted thaw coming up I wanted to shoot some of these incredible icicles before they were no more.

February 11 - Day 207

Roads.
I took a country drive after work today. When we were kids, before carpooling and emissions were such a big thing, we used to go for Sunday drives. I miss the simplicity of that.

February 10 - Day 206

Along Came A Duck and Ruined Her Sunset... Feeling a need to soak in some vitamin D, despite the bitter cold, I went for a walk after work. I thought a sunset photo was just what the doctor ordered. As I followed the sunset looking for the perfect angle I ended up on TJ Dolan Dr. Satisfied I had got a good shot - a beautiful orange sky behind dark tree branches, I headed for home. As I walked further down TJ Dolan, they got me, ducks!!! Lots of them, these guys in the photo were just the tip of the iceberg! I can't resist them.

February 9 - Day 205

Classy Taco Salad.
Saute 1 diced onion and 1 clove garlic, minced, in 1 TBSP olive oil. Add one package of taco seasoning, 1 package veggie ground round and 1 can of black beans. Add a little water and heat through.
On a plate arrange a border of flax seed tortilla chips. On a bed of arugula add veggie and bean mixture. Top with diced avocado, grape tomatoes and sliced red peppers. Dress with a little Catalina dressing.

February 8 - Day 204

Yes Officer.
A Banksy print I bought in Brighton sits upon my bookshelf. I am a stickler for authority - buying this made me feel guilty.

February 7 - Day 203

Sour Puss.
Chopping, squeezing and zesting some lemon for tonight's pasta.

February 6 - Day 202

Dream.

I keep this little charm on my nightstand. Of course we dream at night, but we should remember that it's just as important to be a dreamer during the day.

February 5 - Day 201

The Almost Great One.
Today we headed to Dunville to visit J's family. Here's one of the 'hockey card' shots I took this afternoon out on the pond. Earlier today M told us about his first hockey practice. After my dad finished tying his skates he stood up and proclaimed "Look out Gretzky, here I come!" and wondered why dad laughed. Upon M's first step out onto the ice, he fell flat on his face. Aha!

February 4 - Day 200

Light On. Light Off.
Lamppost at the York St. parking lot just before 6 pm tonight. I'm loving how it's staying lighter out longer!

February 3 - Day 199

Caribbean.
I finished my first James A. Michener book last night before I hit the sack, all 667 pages of it, well not all 667 pages last night. It took me awhile, I actually stopped halfway and read another book; The Secret Daughter which was great. Now that I'm finished I must say I am itching to visit a piece of paradise, now I must decide what island it will be...

February 2 - Day 198

Rec Complex.
Due to a shin splint/possible torn calf muscle I haven't been able to run since the beginning of January, but I am still meeting with the running gals and walking. Today there were lots of runners at the track and how I wished I could join them...

February 1 - Day 197

Sputnik.
My mom had her first coffee at Sputnik today - better late than never - so in honour of that a Sputnik shot - oh and I wanted to get the snowflakes before they are taken down. Great coffee, friendly baristas and fabulous decor. How could you not love this place?

January 31 - Day 196

CN Rail
I pass under this railway track twice daily so it's only fitting it finally gets a photo. This section of track is a little further down from the road, passing over the river.

January 30 - Day 195

Score!
I decided to break in my new winter boots (a super warm and waterproof pair of sorels) and head down to the river for a Sunday lallygag. There were lots of people out on the river, skating, strolling and scoring!

January 29 - Day 194

St. Joe's
Before meeting Megs for Chai Lattes I stop at St. Joseph's Church for a photo session with the monument out front. Is that a peace sign the young lad is making?

January 28 - Day 193

#283
Sometimes you need a reminder like this to get you through the winter blahs...
